White House reporters suspended coverage of President Donald Trump this week after his administration barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House grounds.
Trump said on Truth Social that CNN and MS NOW had “refused to cover” Chinese President Xi Jinping’s arrival at the White House because they did not want to give him credit for the event. The New Republic reported, however, that journalists were protesting the restrictions and that CNN and MS NOW were later prevented from covering Thursday’s state dinner.
MS NOW White House reporter Laura Barrón-López said she had submitted her credentials by the deadline but was denied entry to the greeting ceremony. She later received a credential for a Trump-Xi visit to the National Archives, which was outside the White House grounds.
Trump announced the restrictions the previous week, describing the three organizations as “FAKE NEWS.” The outlets sued the president and his administration, calling the selective ban a First Amendment violation. NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox News were among the broadcasters that joined the suspension of coverage until access was restored.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly ordered the outlets’ access reinstated for two weeks on Thursday, according to The New Republic, which reported that the administration did not immediately comply with the order.
