The U.S. Department of Energy said it will spend nearly $2 billion on 31 projects in 26 states to increase the capacity of the nation’s aging power grid as electricity demand rises.

The projects are expected to add more than 23 gigawatts of capacity, enough to power about 16 million homes, according to Fast Company. The work will focus on extracting more capacity from existing infrastructure through technologies including sensors that measure weather conditions in real time.

Indiana is set to receive about $175 million to upgrade transmission infrastructure and address a regional electricity bottleneck, according to WANE 15 and the Indiana Capital Chronicle. WTHR reported the state’s award as $174 million.

In Pennsylvania, PPL Electric Utilities will receive $71.5 million to modernize an existing high-voltage transmission line, according to 6abc Philadelphia.

The funding comes as the Trump administration seeks to prevent blackouts amid rapidly increasing power demand, including demand associated with artificial intelligence. The awards target upgrades to existing transmission systems rather than relying solely on construction of new power lines.
