Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Israel’s military campaign in Gaza during an address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, rejecting accusations of genocide and calling the war “the opposite of genocide.” He also attacked international critics, called Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan a “tyrant” and described New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani as antisemitic.

Dozens of delegates walked out of the General Assembly hall as Netanyahu took the stage, following a Palestinian call to leave. His speech came hours after Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said the Trump administration had unlawfully denied visas to his delegation, preventing it from attending the meeting.

Outside UN headquarters, hundreds of demonstrators protested Netanyahu’s appearance and Israel’s actions in Gaza. The crowd included Jewish, Palestinian, Iranian and Lebanese New Yorkers, and Jewish Voice for Peace helped lead a sit-in that blocked nearby roads. Jewish participants in a Free Palestine march also publicly rejected Netanyahu’s policies.

More than 100 protesters were arrested, according to reports cited by The Guardian and Common Dreams. Those detained included actors Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder, as well as other public figures and political activists. Protesters accused Netanyahu of war crimes and called for an end to U.S. military support for Israel.
