Five British men arrested near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act and explosives offenses have been released on police bail while the investigation continues.
The men, all from London and aged between 23 and 25, were detained early Sunday near the air base, which is used by U.S. forces. According to The Guardian, investigators were examining three vans found near the base after an initial assessment raised concerns that they contained suspicious or potentially explosive material. Bomb disposal specialists searched the vehicles.
Counter-terrorism police said the suspects remain under investigation and are subject to stringent bail conditions. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor said investigators were keeping an open mind and pursuing multiple lines of inquiry, including whether the activity involved people acting knowingly or unknowingly on behalf of a foreign state. A possible Iranian connection is among the matters being examined, but police have not announced a conclusion.
Residents of about 80 households in nearby Whelford were evacuated during the operation. Cotswold District Council told the BBC that evacuees were taken to a leisure center in Cirencester and provided with food, medication and other support. Twenty-eight people received hotel rooms overnight.
