New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell resigned Friday after an investigation substantiated a sexual harassment complaint and found that he violated workplace and ethics policies.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill said she had given Caldwell until Friday to step down and accepted his resignation that afternoon. A 61-page report released Thursday night concluded that Caldwell made female staff members uncomfortable and found his denial of the allegations not credible. Investigators also determined that he improperly accepted free event tickets for guests and sought a promotion for a state employee he was dating. The report did not accuse him of criminal conduct.
Caldwell disputed the findings and questioned the investigation’s validity and thoroughness. His lawyer, Thomas Calcagni, said Caldwell resigned to end what he called a campaign to discredit his client and was exploring legal remedies to challenge the report.
Democratic and Republican lawmakers had called for Caldwell to resign. Sherrill said his departure reflected her effort to change the culture of state government and ensure employees feel safe at work.
Sherrill appointed acting state comptroller Shirley Emehelu to oversee November’s elections as acting secretary of state, a responsibility previously held by Caldwell.
