Two giant pandas arrived in Atlanta on Sunday from Chengdu, China, beginning a 10-year loan to Zoo Atlanta under an agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association.
Ping Ping, a male, and Fu Shuang, a female, landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport aboard a dedicated FedEx Boeing 777 after a flight of about 16 hours. The pandas, both born in 2020, had lived at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Experienced keepers accompanied them, and bamboo, carrots and steamed corn buns were prepared for the journey, according to Chinese media.
The agreement was announced in April, but the animals’ arrival timeline was announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his recent state visit to Washington and meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump. Xi described pandas as envoys of friendship between the two countries.
Zoo Atlanta said the animals will spend about a month in quarantine in a biosecure section of its renovated giant panda complex before going on public view. The zoo has not announced a debut date. It also secured a long-term supply of locally grown bamboo ahead of their arrival.
The arrival restores giant pandas to Zoo Atlanta after its previous four bears returned to China in 2024, ending the zoo’s earlier 25-year agreement.
