Trump Presses Xi for Help Reopening Strait of Hormuz Ahead of Beijing Summit

President Donald Trump is pressing Chinese leader Xi Jinping to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, linking the request to a planned summit in Beijing at the end of September.
Trump told the Financial Times that he wanted to know before the summit whether China would assist efforts to secure the strait, and said he could delay his trip without an answer. Iran’s closure of the shipping route has disrupted about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply, contributing to higher prices and concerns about shortages. Trump has also called on France, Japan, South Korea and Britain to help.
China has limited incentive to participate, according to CNN. Beijing has built crude reserves, diversified its suppliers and expanded investment in wind, solar power and electric vehicles, giving it more capacity to withstand an extended oil disruption. CNN also reported that Iran was considering allowing some tankers through if their oil was traded in Chinese yuan.
Chinese state media has called broadly for greater cooperation between Beijing and Washington, while the nationalist Global Times opposed sending Chinese warships to the strait. The Telegraph separately reported that Trump asked Xi to stop helping Iran.
The request adds another dispute to talks already expected to address Chinese exports. Trump and Xi have continued direct engagement, including a White House state dinner, while some Republican senators have criticized Trump’s reception of Xi following reports that China assisted Iran.
