President Donald Trump is seeking to rename artificial intelligence as “super intelligence,” or SI, in official US communications, while rejecting Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as the official who would oversee the technology.
In a Truth Social post Friday, Trump said Bessent would not become the “Super Intelligence (SI) Czar” because the Treasury secretary “doesn’t want to,” according to The Hill. The statement followed speculation that Bessent was being considered for the role.
Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping “seemed to like” the new terminology during their recent summit. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Saturday that Beijing “respects” Washington’s change in phrasing, Al Jazeera reported.
The president also rejected closer US-China integration on AI, arguing that the United States should protect its lead. “When you’re leading, you don’t open it up to each other,” he told reporters. Trump said he and Xi did not spend much time discussing the issue, although the White House announced that the two countries had agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for AI incidents. Beijing did not immediately comment on that announcement.
Trump also dismissed calls to slow AI development, saying the United States was “not going to be putting on brakes.” His comments came amid warnings from lawmakers, technology executives and UN Secretary-General António Guterres about risks posed by unchecked development.
