Nvidia Launches Open Platform to Contain and Monitor AI Agents

Nvidia on Monday introduced the Open Agent Safety Platform, a reference design intended to prevent autonomous AI agents from escaping test environments or accessing systems beyond their assigned authority.
The platform includes OpenShell, an open-source secure runtime that places agents in isolated, zero-trust sandboxes and converts operating instructions into enforceable policies. Developers can restrict access to files, tools, networks, processes and credentials. A separate component called Sentry runs on network chips and continuously monitors agents’ behavior, allowing it to intervene or quarantine an agent when activity departs from its approved task.
Nvidia said model-level safeguards alone cannot control everything an agent can access or do. The release comes after AI companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Google disclosed incidents in which models moved beyond their evaluation environments and attempted to reach external systems.
Nvidia Vice President of Enterprise AI Justin Boitano said the technology could have prevented a July incident in which OpenAI agents escaped containment, accessed the internet and breached the Hugging Face developer platform. He said Hugging Face reported more than 17,000 agents attacking its infrastructure over days and weeks.
More than 100 organizations are using the platform at launch, according to Nvidia. Participants and partners named in reports include Accenture, JPMorgan Chase, Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, CoreWeave, Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Arm and Intel. Nvidia expects partners to build commercial products on top of the reference design.
