India and Pakistan exchanged accusations over terrorism and Kashmir during the 81st United Nations General Assembly session in New York.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for what he described as a “just and fair resolution of the Kashmir dispute” and accused India of “weaponizing” water, according to Deutsche Welle. Pakistan also alleged that India’s “terrorist exports” had spread internationally, Dawn reported.
India responded by accusing Pakistan of “terrorism, deceit and duplicity” and supporting cross-border terrorism. Indian officials also warned that terrorism would have consequences and rejected Pakistan’s criticism of India’s democratic record.
The dispute continued outside the assembly. During a Friday press briefing connected to the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was interrupted by a Pakistani reporter asking about terrorism. “A terrorist country is asking me that question,” Jaishankar replied, according to Times Now. He was appearing with Liberian Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti.
Jaishankar was leading India’s delegation during the General Assembly’s high-level week and was scheduled to address the high-level session on Saturday.
