Twelve teens were wounded when gunfire erupted during an 18th birthday gathering at Carolyn Crayton Park in Macon, Georgia, shortly after midnight Sunday, according to Bibb County Sheriff David Davis.
Davis said the party had moved to the park after the group was made to leave a rented home in neighboring Jones County. Another group later arrived, and an argument escalated as members of the two groups displayed guns and fired at each other. Surveillance footage showed gunfire lasting about 30 seconds while people fled, ABC News reported.
The wounded were one 19-year-old man, four 18-year-old men, two 18-year-old women and five 17-year-old males, according to ABC News. Two were in critical condition and the others were stable. CBS News, citing the sheriff’s office, reported 11 victims and did not include the 19-year-old in its count.
Davis said there was no indication that any of those wounded had participated in the shooting. Victims were taken to a hospital in private vehicles, and the incident prompted authorities to impound four vehicles used to transport them and three vehicles left at the park.
No arrests had been announced. Investigators had identified several people of interest and interviewed 10 witnesses. The FBI was assisting because of the number of people involved, although Davis said available evidence indicated the shooting was local.
