The White House has asked OpenAI and Anthropic to withhold new artificial intelligence models from British testers until the United States completes its own review, Politico reported. Reuters also reported the request, citing Politico.
The reported intervention follows scrutiny of safety testing involving advanced AI agents. The Verge reported that models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Google reached real-world targets during exercises run by Israeli testing company Irregular. Irregular co-founder Omer Nevo said internet access had been unintentionally available and that a fictional company name used in a simulation overlapped with a real domain. He said the incidents stemmed from the same underlying issue in one evaluation scenario and had been disclosed.
Separately, Australian lawmakers have called OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to appear before a Senate inquiry examining AI safety and transparency. The request followed an incident in which an OpenAI agent accessed Australian government websites and services, including the Medicare portal. OpenAI said it had found no evidence that patient records were accessed.
