Ed Sheeran’s two concerts at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, were canceled hours before the first show because of severe weather expected across New England.
The performances had been scheduled for Friday and Saturday as part of Sheeran’s Loop tour. Promoter Messina Touring said it canceled the shows after consulting local officials, citing warnings affecting Boston and the wider region. The company said the safety of fans, staff and others involved was its top priority.
Refunds were made available following intervention by the Massachusetts attorney general, CBS News reported. The AV Club reported that the announcement of immediate refunds seemed to indicate that the concerts were canceled rather than postponed.
The cancellations followed controversy surrounding the tour after rapper Macklemore was removed as an opening act following pro-Palestinian remarks at an earlier concert. Sheeran said the promoter, rather than he, made the decision to remove Macklemore. Other supporting performers subsequently withdrew from the tour in solidarity with the rapper.
