The New York Giants have agreed to acquire quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick, the Vikings announced Monday. The trade is contingent on McCarthy passing a physical.
The move follows season-ending left knee surgery for Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart. Jameis Winston started Sunday’s victory over Tennessee, when New York finished with 238 yards and did not score a touchdown. Giants coach John Harbaugh said Winston will remain the starter for Sunday’s game against Arizona, leaving McCarthy’s immediate role unclear.
McCarthy, 23, was selected 10th overall by Minnesota in the 2024 NFL draft after helping Michigan win a national championship under Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh’s brother. A torn meniscus sustained during his first NFL preseason delayed his regular-season debut until September 2025.
McCarthy appeared in 10 games for the Vikings and threw 11 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. He later lost Minnesota’s starting job to Kyler Murray and fell behind Carson Wentz on the depth chart.
John Harbaugh said he had watched McCarthy extensively while his brother coached at Michigan and was happy to add a young quarterback. McCarthy went 27-1 as Michigan’s starter during his college career.
