Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, in a rare visit confirmed by both governments the following day.
The UAE’s official WAM news agency said the leaders discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them. Netanyahu’s office said the talks also addressed regional challenges and that the prime minister was accompanied by senior national security and diplomatic officials, including the heads of the Mossad and National Security Council.
Ynet, citing sources familiar with the visit, reported that representatives from Saudi Arabia and other regional countries attended talks focused on Iran, the Houthis and possible Israeli assistance with air-defence systems. The outlet said representatives from Morocco, Libya, Jordan and Qatar also apparently attended, but the identities and ranks of those participants were not disclosed. The UAE’s official statement did not mention a wider regional meeting.
The visit followed a Haaretz report alleging that Bin Zayed warned Netanyahu shortly before the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, that Hamas was preparing a major operation. Netanyahu’s office has denied that he received such advance information. The Associated Press reported that Netanyahu asked Bin Zayed during Sunday’s meeting to deny the allegation; Netanyahu’s office rejected that account and said the visit focused solely on bilateral relations and regional challenges.
The meeting came ahead of Israel’s October parliamentary elections, as Netanyahu faces domestic political pressure and a challenge from former military chief Gadi Eisenkot.
