Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran was ready for dialogue but rejected “the language of force” during an address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
In an interview aired Saturday, Pezeshkian told Al Jazeera that Iran no longer trusted negotiations with Washington because earlier talks had been followed by attacks and sanctions. He said Qatar and Pakistan were relaying messages between the two sides as Iran awaited a US response to its latest proposal. ABC News reported that President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran’s seven-day roadmap would begin with several days of initial steps, followed by reopening the strait on the sixth day and starting negotiations on a final agreement on the seventh. Under the proposal described by Al Jazeera, Washington would lift its blockade of Iranian ports, waive sanctions on Iranian oil sales, release about $12 billion in frozen assets and observe a regional ceasefire. Iran would reopen the waterway in return.
Pezeshkian denied that Iran bore sole responsibility for blocking Hormuz, calling the closure a response to routes being cut off to Iran.
His UN remarks also drew criticism from Iranians quoted by Iran International, including families of protesters, who accused him of condemning coercion abroad while defending crackdowns at home and omitting anti-government protests from his speech.
