Iran said Sunday it would maintain its conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz after US President Donald Trump publicly rejected Tehran’s seven-day proposal to ease the conflict and resume negotiations.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said reopening the waterway depended on an end to regional hostilities, including fighting in Lebanon, as well as the lifting of the US naval blockade, the release of frozen Iranian assets and the removal of sanctions on Iranian oil. Tehran said it had sent the plan to Washington through Qatari mediators during the UN General Assembly in New York.
Trump confirmed Saturday that he had rejected the proposal. US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said Iran had sought extensive sanctions relief before further talks and that Trump was not confident Tehran was negotiating in good faith. Trump nevertheless told Axios that he expected additional talks in the coming week.
Araghchi said Iran had seen Trump’s public remarks but had not received a formal response through mediators. He said Tehran remained open to diplomacy while being prepared for renewed fighting.
Shipping through Hormuz remains severely disrupted. Iranian authorities require vessels to use approved routes and have threatened restrictions against companies using routes they consider unauthorized. Washington says US forces are escorting tankers through an alternative route while enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports; Tehran disputes US claims of control over the strait.
Oil prices rose in Asian trading Monday, with Brent crude gaining about 2.7% and US crude futures rising about 1.7%.
