President Donald Trump is promoting “super intelligence,” or SI, as a replacement term for artificial intelligence while rejecting calls to slow the technology’s development or coordinate closely with China.
Trump said his administration would use the new term in official communications, according to Al Jazeera. He also said Chinese President Xi Jinping appeared receptive to the wording during their recent summit. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Beijing “respects” Washington’s change in phrasing.
Speaking to reporters Saturday, Trump said the United States was “not going to be putting on brakes” for AI and dismissed warnings about its risks as “hoaxes.” He argued that regulation would hinder US progress and said the country should not integrate its AI efforts with China because the United States is ahead. Trump said AI was not discussed extensively with Xi, though the White House later announced that the two countries had agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for AI incidents. Beijing had not immediately commented on that announcement.
Trump separately ruled out Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as his proposed “Super Intelligence (SI) Czar.” In a Truth Social post cited by The Hill, Trump said Bessent would not take the position because he “doesn’t want to.”
Trump also disputed a Wall Street Journal report suggesting China was surpassing the United States in the AI and energy race, asserting that the US leads the world in AI “by far.”
