European Union ministers agreed on Sept. 28 to impose sanctions on 10 Russian officials involved in barring the anti-war opposition party Yabloko from participating in Russia’s parliamentary elections, according to the Kyiv Independent.
The measures target judges, prosecutors and public officials linked to repression and politically motivated prosecutions against the party. Those listed, including three Russian Supreme Court judges and an official from the Prosecutor General’s Office, face asset freezes and restrictions on transactions with EU companies.
The EU also sanctioned 27 individuals and organizations accused of involvement in the transfer and indoctrination of more than 20,000 Ukrainian children. The listings cover children’s camps and sports centers in Russia, Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory and North Korea. The Songdowon International Children’s Camp in North Korea was listed over programs that the EU said transferred Ukrainian children to promote pro-Russian narratives.
Separately, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas proposed sanctions against people accused of enabling Russian elections in occupied Ukrainian territories. Diplomats discussed an initial list of 77 people, including candidates and electoral commission members. The proposal was undergoing legal review ahead of a planned Oct. 12 meeting of EU foreign ministers.
