Military chiefs from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan met in Riyadh on Friday to discuss collective defence as Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi territory intensified.

Pakistan’s military said the commanders reviewed threats facing Saudi Arabia and discussed stronger intelligence sharing and military coordination. They also pledged to put commitments under the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement into practice. Signed on August 7, the pact treats an attack on any of the three countries as an attack on all.

The meeting followed talks in New York among Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. Saudi Arabia called for urgent support under the pact, while public statements from Pakistan and Turkiye emphasized institutional arrangements and broader security discussions.

The Houthis said they had launched dozens of missiles and drones at Saudi targets, including a sensitive site in Riyadh and Saudi Aramco facilities in Yanbu. Saudi authorities said air defences intercepted six ballistic missiles aimed at Taif and Yanbu and issued emergency alerts for Mecca, Jeddah and Yanbu. The Houthis denied Saudi accusations that they targeted Mecca.

Addressing the UN General Assembly, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called any threat to Mecca or Medina a “red line”. Neither Pakistan nor Turkiye has committed publicly to entering the fighting. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said possible support could include intelligence, logistics or ammunition, with broader assistance depending on the threat.
