Bangkok authorities declared the entire Thai capital a flood disaster zone after days of heavy rain overwhelmed drainage systems, inundated homes and roads, and forced nearly 4,900 people into temporary shelters.
About 52,000 households were affected, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. More than 330mm (13 inches) of rain fell in parts of the city between Thursday and Sunday, Thailand’s weather agency said. Floodwater reached knee- to waist-height in some areas, while levels in Bangkok’s canal network remained high on Sunday.
Authorities worked to accelerate drainage as residents began cleaning homes and salvaging belongings. Several roads remained flooded, and Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt urged people to avoid unnecessary travel. Residents near canals were advised to move possessions to upper floors, while the public was asked to avoid panic-buying. Hundreds of city schools were due to close on Monday.
Rain eased in the capital on Sunday, although flooding persisted in low-lying districts. Officials had forecast additional rain during the day before conditions began improving on Monday.
At least eight people were reported killed across Thailand during the previous 10 days, France 24 reported. No deaths in Bangkok were specified. The flooding came during September, the peak of Thailand’s rainy season.
