The United States and China agreed to establish a channel for handling artificial intelligence-related incidents and to accelerate work on military crisis communications following a three-day summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington.

Both governments said they would create a mechanism to discuss AI risks and benefits, with a dedicated dialogue scheduled for November. China’s Foreign Ministry said the countries also agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening communication and preventing military crises.

The two sides pledged to continue work on reducing reciprocal tariffs covering about $30 billion in goods, largely non-sensitive products such as agricultural goods and holiday decorations. The leaders also extended an existing trade truce by two months. The White House said a bilateral Board of Trade began operating during the week and that China agreed to import at least 10 million metric tons of U.S. coal in both 2027 and 2028.

Talks will continue over U.S. concerns about supplies of rare earths, with the stated goal of restoring shipments to appropriate levels. The White House also welcomed China’s decision to impose export controls on two additional precursor chemicals used in fentanyl production.

Trump and Xi agreed to meet again at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen in November and later at the G20 summit in Florida.
