Four people were killed when a helicopter crashed and caught fire Saturday afternoon in Sainte-Brigide-d’Iberville, about 50 kilometres southeast of Montreal, Quebec provincial police said.
Emergency services were called shortly after 2:30 p.m. local time following a report of a helicopter in distress that may have crashed. Responders found the aircraft burning in a field near Rang des Écossais, off Highway 10. All four occupants were declared dead at the scene, according to police. The fire was brought under control about an hour after the emergency call.
The victims had not been identified, and Sergeant Audrey-Anne Bilodeau of the Sûreté du Québec told the BBC that the identification process could take several days. Police said the aircraft appeared to be a private helicopter.
The Sûreté du Québec’s Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation with crime-scene technicians and investigators from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. Authorities continued working at the crash site Saturday night. No cause of the crash was immediately reported.
