A Russian drone struck the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in central Kyiv on Thursday, setting the building ablaze and killing one person, Al Jazeera reported. The Telegraph described the wider assault as an attack on scientists in the Ukrainian capital.
The academy strike was part of continuing Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said another drone hit a school in the city, but no one was injured because children were sheltering in the basement, according to The Guardian. Ukraine has said it is struggling to intercept Russian ballistic missiles and new jet-powered drones deployed in daily attacks.
Poland issued and later lifted a warning for residents to take shelter during the Russian strikes on Ukraine, Reuters reported.
Ukraine also continued long-range attacks inside Russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces struck an oil facility in Russia’s Samara region, a Russian vessel in the Black Sea, and a launch and storage site for attack drones in the Oryol region. The attacks proceeded despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s calls for Kyiv to stop targeting Russian refineries, which he has blamed in part for higher diesel prices. Energy analysts cited by The Guardian said the war in Iran and broader disruption to oil markets were the leading causes of the increase.
