A medical helicopter crashed into the ocean off Catalina Island on Wednesday evening, killing two people and leaving one missing, authorities said. Two others were hospitalized in stable condition on the mainland.
First responders were called shortly before 8 p.m. and pulled four people from the water, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Two were pronounced dead at the scene. Search-and-rescue crews continued looking overnight for a fifth person reported to have been aboard the aircraft.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn said she was told the medevac helicopter went down shortly after taking off from Catalina. County firefighters and lifeguards responded alongside the U.S. Coast Guard and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities said the aircraft was submerged in about 240 feet of water. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was investigating the crash.
KTLA reported that the helicopter was believed to be owned by Sacramento-based REACH Air Medical Services. NBC 7 San Diego reported that the aircraft had departed from Oceanside.
