Pope Leo XIV said concerns that artificial intelligence could pose catastrophic risks are not “fake news” and called for governments, technology companies and civil society to discuss safeguards and regulation.

Speaking to reporters on a flight to Rome after a four-day visit to France, Leo said he was not in “panic mode” but believed warnings from AI experts should be taken seriously. He urged political leaders, AI executives and social organizations to examine both the technology’s current effects and possible future dangers.

“We can’t just sit back and pretend nothing’s going to happen,” the pope said, calling for dialogue, research and measures to prevent AI from reaching a point where it could destroy humanity.

His remarks contradicted U.S. President Donald Trump, who has described fears of AI going rogue as a “hoax.” Leo also criticized Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, noting reports that Huang had discussed ways to place guardrails in some AI models while opposing government limits and regulation. Huang told CBS News this month that he agreed with Trump that AI safety concerns were overblown.

Leo has repeatedly raised concerns about AI during his papacy, while the Vatican has advocated international governance of the technology, including in areas involving nuclear technology, culture and artistic creation.
