At least two people were killed and more than 10 remained missing after an avalanche struck a climbing camp on Himlung Himal in north-central Nepal on Sunday, according to multiple reports.
The avalanche hit a group of Nepali climbers and support workers who had gone ahead of foreign clients to prepare the base camp, establish the route and fix ropes for the autumn climbing season. Himlung Himal, near Nepal’s border with Tibet, rises 7,126 metres (23,380 feet).
Al Jazeera reported that at least 10 people had been rescued, while Tul Singh Gurung, president of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, told AFP that 14 expedition workers were missing. All those killed or missing were Nepali nationals.
Rescuers recovered two bodies and airlifted them to Kathmandu on Monday. A team of experienced mountain guides continued searching the avalanche site after heavy snow and poor weather initially prevented helicopters and ground crews from reaching the area.
The avalanche followed days of heavy precipitation. Flooding and landslides were also reported over the weekend in Manang district, where the mountain is located, as authorities warned of severe weather across Nepal.
