US President Donald Trump said he had rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume nuclear negotiations within seven days in exchange for concessions from Washington.

Iran presented the plan through Qatari mediators during the UN General Assembly in New York. Under the proposal, the United States would lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports, allow the release of frozen Iranian assets, waive sanctions restricting Iranian oil exports and support a ceasefire across the region. Iran would then reopen the strategic waterway and begin negotiations on a broader agreement.

“They made a proposal but I reject it,” Trump told reporters at the White House. He separately said the proposal was unacceptable, while adding that he would like to reach a deal.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran would not retreat from its conditions and was still awaiting Washington’s definitive position through mediators. He said Iran would decide how to proceed after receiving that response. France 24 reported that Araghchi expected a US response on Tuesday.

US and Iranian representatives had earlier held three hours of indirect talks through mediators. US officials described those discussions as positive and constructive, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington was open to further talks.

The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed US officials, reported that Trump doubts Iran will meet his demands concerning its nuclear programme and has told aides he expects renewed US strikes after the November midterm elections.
