The European Union on Friday rejected a US threat to halt diesel exports unless European countries release more fuel from emergency reserves, as governments held urgent talks over tightening global supplies and rising prices.
Reuters reported that Washington had told France and Germany to release diesel stocks or face an export ban. Politico reported that the Trump administration’s energy chief asked Europe to release more than a third of its diesel reserves. President Donald Trump said the United States was considering an export ban “very seriously” and might ask European countries to draw down their reserves. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged European partners to make additional supplies available immediately.
The US exports about 1.2 million to 1.5 million barrels of diesel a day, according to the BBC. Fuel costs have surged amid the war in Iran, while Chinese refiners have reportedly halted some October fuel exports to prioritize domestic demand.
Britain joined talks with European partners about a coordinated response. UK Transport Minister Keir Mather said the country was not facing a shortage and described its supply network as resilient. The UK obtains about 30% of its diesel from the US and holds reserves covering 42 days, The Guardian reported.
UK diesel prices crossed £2 a litre on Friday for the first time, according to the RAC. EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen said members of the International Energy Agency were discussing a possible reserve release, an option they had used before and were likely to use again.
