Polls show Cooper leading Whatley in North Carolina Senate race

Democrat Roy Cooper holds an advantage over Republican Michael Whatley in North Carolina’s U.S. Senate race, according to several recent polls released with five weeks remaining before the midterm elections.

A poll reported by WCNC placed Cooper eight percentage points ahead of Whatley, while The Center Square reported a separate double-digit edge driven by younger and Black voters. Newsweek reported that Cooper led among independent voters by 29 points, reversing the margin President Donald Trump received from that group. An AARP poll covered by The News & Observer also found an age-based divide in the Senate contest, while voters across age groups shared concerns about rising prices.

ABC News reported that Republicans increasingly see serious problems in North Carolina and are shifting more resources toward defending Senate seats elsewhere, although the party has not abandoned the state. North Carolina Republican strategist Paul Shoemaker attributed the party’s difficulties to a Republican turnout problem and voter dissatisfaction with the administration’s response to economic concerns.

Trump narrowly carried North Carolina in 2024. Democrats need a net gain of four Senate seats nationwide to regain the majority.
