Another wave of landslides and heavy rain has killed about 30 people in Nepal, roughly a month after catastrophic flooding in August killed 1,400 and left thousands missing, according to the BBC.
Nepal’s national disaster management authority said more than 1,900 families had been affected since late last week and more than 240 homes damaged. Roads, buildings and bridges have been swept away, forcing residents in several communities from their homes.
Hundreds of trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit have cut short their journeys, with many evacuated by helicopter from the Manang and Mustang districts. Trekkers and guides described spending three or four days navigating collapsed roads, destroyed bridges and numerous landslides while descending from the mountains.
A large landslide partially blocked a river near Chame, creating a temporary lake that inundated homes and a key bridge. Authorities have used excavators in an effort to release the water, but locals told the BBC that the work had made limited progress.
The deaths come amid wider monsoon disruption across South and Southeast Asia. Separate reports said heavy rain, flooding and landslides had killed dozens in India, Nepal and Thailand, including 56 deaths reported in Uttar Pradesh.
