Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro are tied in a potential presidential runoff ahead of the country’s October 4 election, according to a Quaest poll released Monday. Reuters also reported that an Atlas poll showed the two candidates tied in a runoff scenario.
The Quaest survey put both Lula, of the Workers’ Party, and Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party, at 42% in a second-round matchup. In its first-round simulation, Lula led with 39%, compared with Bolsonaro’s 34%. The previous Quaest poll had shown Bolsonaro at 42% and Lula at 41% in a runoff, within the survey’s margin of error.
Bolsonaro, a senator and the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, is Lula’s leading challenger. Other first-round candidates remained well behind: Augusto Cury and Ronaldo Caiado each received 4%, Renan Santos had 3%, and Romeu Zema had 1%. Five percent of respondents were undecided, while 10% said they would cast a blank or spoiled ballot or would not vote.
Quaest surveyed 2,004 voters from September 24 through September 27. The poll, commissioned by Grupo Globo, has a margin of error of two percentage points and a stated confidence level of 95%.
