The family and partner of Renee Good filed two civil lawsuits Thursday over her fatal shooting by a federal immigration officer during the Trump administration’s January immigration crackdown in Minneapolis.
Good, 37, was shot multiple times inside her car on Jan. 7 during Operation Metro Surge. She and her partner, Becca Good, had joined demonstrations against the deployment of armed federal agents to arrest migrants. Federal officials said the officer acted in self-defense and accused Good of using her vehicle as a weapon.
One lawsuit names the United States as the defendant and seeks damages under Minnesota wrongful-death law. It alleges assault, battery, false imprisonment, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress, and argues that the officer used excessive force in violation of ICE policy and the Fourth Amendment.
A second lawsuit alleges that federal officials conspired to violate the civil rights of Minneapolis residents by targeting Somali and Hispanic communities and suppressing people who observed or protested the operation. Defendants include the ICE officer who shot Good, White House adviser Stephen Miller, former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, former Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino and other administration officials.
The plaintiffs are Good’s partner and her brother, Brent Ganger, acting as trustee for her next of kin, including her three children. They are seeking financial damages and jury trials. No agent involved in Good’s death has been charged.
