The Trump administration has begun sending one-time $500 payments to nearly 1 million Affordable Care Act enrollees in 30 states, describing the money as refunds for fees it says were improperly passed on to consumers under the Biden administration.
The recipients use HealthCare.gov in states where the federal government administers the insurance exchange. According to CBS News, an administration official said the payments will primarily go to people earning more than 400% of the federal poverty level who purchase coverage through the platform without receiving federal subsidies.
Payments will arrive by check or direct deposit. Families may receive more than one $500 payment if multiple members qualify, the official said. Recipients will also receive a letter from President Donald Trump saying the administration is returning surplus funds accumulated from fees associated with operating HealthCare.gov.
The White House has characterized those fees as an overcharge that raised consumers’ premiums.
The payments are being distributed as many people report higher health-care costs. A KFF poll released in March found that half of respondents said their premiums, deductibles or other costs were “a lot higher” than the previous year.
