Ukraine marked Defenders Day on Oct. 1 as President Volodymyr Zelensky said its forces had recently attacked Russian military and energy-related sites, while preparing another phase of a counteroffensive in Donetsk Oblast.
Zelensky said Ukrainian forces struck a Black Sea target, a drone launch-and-storage site in Russia’s Oryol Oblast, an oil facility in Samara Oblast and a military supply depot in Bryansk Oblast. Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi said Ukraine was emphasizing drones, precision strikes and other technology to conserve personnel.
In the Lyman area, Ukraine is preparing a fourth phase of Operation Vivaldi, according to the Kyiv Post. Zelensky said the first three phases had retaken 176 square kilometers, captured 250 Russian troops and inflicted more than 5,000 Russian casualties. He also highlighted the operation’s use of ground robotic systems.
The continued attacks on Russian oil infrastructure come amid differing accounts of Zelensky’s recent talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump told Fox News that he asked Zelensky to ease strikes on Russian refineries because of their effect on global fuel prices and said the Ukrainian leader indicated he probably would. Zelensky previously said Trump had not pressured him to halt such attacks.
Zelensky separately said Trump had approved licensing Ukraine to manufacture Patriot missile interceptors. Following Russian strikes that Zelensky said killed two people and injured 14 on Sept. 26, he also urged Washington and the European Union to intensify sanctions against Russia and entities supporting its war.
