The Chicago White Sox advanced to the American League Division Series with a 7-3 win over the Houston Astros on Wednesday, completing a sweep of their wild-card series. The victory was Chicago’s first postseason series win since the White Sox beat Houston in the 2005 World Series.
Chicago scored four runs in the first inning, aided by two Houston errors. The Astros pulled within 4-3 on solo home runs by Jeremy Peña, Cam Smith and Jose Altuve, but Chase Meidroth hit a three-run homer in the sixth to restore the White Sox’s four-run lead.
The White Sox, managed by Will Venable, will face AL Central champion Cleveland in an AL Division Series beginning Saturday in Cleveland. Their advance follows three consecutive 100-loss seasons, including consecutive such seasons immediately before this year’s playoff berth.
Houston finished the regular season 81-81 and was swept at home in the wild-card round for the second straight postseason. The defeat was the Astros’ ninth consecutive home playoff loss.
Elsewhere, the San Diego Padres eliminated the Chicago Cubs to set up a series against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs had reached the playoffs for a second consecutive season, while Pete Crow-Armstrong completed a 40-40 campaign. The New York Yankees also completed a sweep, beating the Boston Red Sox 9-2, and will face the Tampa Bay Rays.
