President Donald Trump said Friday that the United States would not ban diesel exports after Group of Seven economies agreed to release fuel from emergency stockpiles, ending a threat that had raised concerns about supplies and prices in Europe.
Trump had said he was considering export restrictions to lower US fuel costs ahead of November’s midterm elections and had suggested asking European countries to tap their reserves. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had also urged Europe to release diesel stocks, saying US farmers, truckers and businesses should not bear the burden of rising prices.
The European Union initially “fully rejected” the threat, according to France 24. EU energy commissioner Dan Jørgensen said Europe was discussing a possible coordinated reserve release with members of the International Energy Agency.
Britain, which receives about 30% of its imported diesel from the United States, joined talks with European partners. UK transport minister Keir Mather said the country was not facing a shortage, citing diverse supply sources and reserves sufficient for 42 days. British diesel prices nevertheless reached a record average of just over £2 a litre on Friday, according to the RAC.
The United States exports about 1.2 million to 1.5 million barrels of diesel per day, primarily to Latin America, while several European countries have grown more dependent on US supplies after reductions in Russian and Middle Eastern fuel flows.
