A 25-year-old dual UK-Iranian national arrested in connection with a suspected terrorist plot near RAF Fairford has been released on bail, British authorities confirmed Saturday.
Counter-terrorism police detained the man Thursday in Westminster, London, on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. Searches of two properties in the area have concluded. Police initially issued conflicting details about his age and whether another man had been questioned, but later clarified that the suspect was 25 and no second man had been questioned under caution.
Five British men in their twenties, also from London, were arrested near the Gloucestershire airbase early Sunday after three suspicious vans and masked men were reported nearby. Police found a quantity of petrol but no explosive devices. Those five suspects were released on bail Monday and remain under investigation.
Vicki Evans, the senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, described the inquiry as “hugely complex” and said investigators were examining multiple lines of inquiry, including possible foreign-state involvement.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said there are “strong indications” that Iran played a role, without disclosing supporting evidence. Tehran has categorically denied involvement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu separately claimed Israel provided Britain with intelligence about what he called an Iranian-sponsored attack.
RAF Fairford is operated by the U.S. Air Force and has recently been used by American bombers for operations involving Iran.
