Brazilians are set to vote Sunday, October 4, in a presidential election led by incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
A Quaest poll commissioned by Grupo Globo and released Monday put Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro level at 42% in a potential runoff. In its first-round simulation, Lula led 39% to 34%, while other candidates remained in single digits. The survey questioned 2,004 voters from September 24 to 27 and had a margin of error of two percentage points.
Both leading campaigns drew thousands of supporters as campaigning neared its end. Lula held a march Friday through central Rio de Janeiro, where he portrayed the contest as a defense of democracy and accused the Bolsonaro movement of fascism. Flávio Bolsonaro has campaigned as the successor to his father’s conservative political movement.
Jair Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year prison sentence after being convicted of attempting a coup following his defeat by Lula in the 2022 election. His supporters stormed Brazil’s Congress, Supreme Court and presidential palace in Brasília in January 2023 in an effort to overturn the result.
Foreign policy has not dominated the campaign, but the candidates offer different approaches. Lula supports multilateral relations and continued engagement with China, Brazil’s largest trading partner. Flávio Bolsonaro favors closer ties with the United States and other right-wing governments, according to Deutsche Welle.
