Divers recovered the body of a patient from the wreckage of a medical helicopter that crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Catalina Island, bringing the death toll to three, authorities said Friday. Two other people were hospitalized after the crash.
The helicopter, carrying five people, went down shortly after taking off from Catalina Island on Wednesday evening. First responders were called shortly before 8 p.m. and pulled four people from the water. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, while two were taken in stable condition to mainland hospitals.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna identified the two initially confirmed dead by their roles as the male pilot and a female nurse. Another medic and a male passenger were hospitalized. REACH Air Medical Services, the helicopter’s operator, said two crew members had died and a third was recovering in a hospital.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s divers found the missing patient Thursday inside the submerged wreckage after a Coast Guard search covering more than 156 square miles over 23 hours. Relatives told ABC7 that she was being transported to the mainland for treatment following an allergic reaction and that her 20-year-old son accompanied her to translate.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause. It identified the aircraft as a Eurocopter EC-135-P2 and said the wreckage would be taken to a secure facility for examination.
