Ukrainian forces struck oil infrastructure in Russia’s Volgograd and Samara regions overnight, Ukraine’s General Staff said on Oct. 2, reporting fires and explosions at both sites.
The targets included the Lukoil-owned Volgograd oil refinery and the Samara line-production control station near Prosvet, according to the General Staff. Ukrainian media and monitoring channels also reported a fire near the Volgograd refinery and identified the Samara site as a major oil-transport facility. The extent of the damage was not immediately clear.
The Volgograd refinery is among Russia’s largest oil-processing facilities, with an annual capacity of about 15 million metric tons of crude. The Samara station blends crude grades used to produce Urals, Russia’s main oil export blend. Both facilities have previously been targeted by Ukrainian forces.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian operations over the preceding day also targeted sites in Russia’s Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod and Krasnodar regions, as well as the Black Sea. He listed airfields, industrial facilities, oil refineries, a missile and space center, and an ammunition depot among the targets, but did not provide detailed damage assessments.
