Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi on Sunday during an unannounced visit that both governments confirmed the following day.
The UAE’s state news agency said the leaders discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them, while Netanyahu’s office said the talks focused on closer ties and regional challenges. CNN, citing an Israeli source familiar with the meeting, reported that Iran dominated the discussion and that Netanyahu presented Israeli intelligence indicating Tehran had resumed progress on its nuclear program, including new construction at the Pickaxe mountain site south of Tehran.
CNN also reported that the talks covered Yemen’s Houthi movement, the Bab al-Mandeb waterway and the Strait of Hormuz. Two sources told the network that a senior Saudi security official attended, but Saudi officials denied any Saudi participation.
Channel 12 reported that Netanyahu sought a UAE denial of earlier claims that Sheikh Mohamed had warned him about a potential Hamas attack before October 7, 2023. Netanyahu’s office denied that this was the purpose of the trip and has also denied receiving such a warning.
Israel’s Shin Bet security service filed a complaint against Channel 12 for reporting the visit before Netanyahu’s aircraft returned to Israeli airspace. Netanyahu’s office said the broadcast violated censorship rules and endangered the prime minister, his wife and a delegation that included the Mossad chief and other senior officials.
