Yemen’s internationally recognised government announced a military campaign on Sunday to retake territory held by the Iran-backed Houthis, as fighting intensified around Taiz and the two sides exchanged claims of strikes.
Rashad al-Alimi, head of the Saudi-backed Presidential Leadership Council, said in a televised address that armed and security forces had been ordered to carry out an approved plan to restore state authority across Yemen. State institutions were placed on full alert.
The announcement followed reports that Houthi forces had severed a key supply route linking government-held Taiz with Aden, the government’s interim capital. France 24 and the BBC, citing security sources, reported that the move had effectively isolated Taiz, although the Houthis had not captured the city itself.
Government military spokesman Colonel Majed Abdullah al-Nazili said Yemeni forces conducted 257 targeting operations against Houthi positions and movements on Saturday, with initial estimates of at least 700 Houthi fighters killed. Those figures could not be independently verified. The Saudi-led coalition separately said it carried out 97 operations against Houthi reinforcements near Taiz and the Tor al-Baha front early Sunday. Reuters also reported a spokesperson’s account of 20 strikes in Taiz province, while the Houthis alleged 94 Saudi strikes over 24 hours.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group retaliated with ballistic missiles and drones against Saudi Aramco facilities in Riyadh and Khurais, claiming the attacks caused fires. Saudi Arabia did not immediately confirm or comment on the alleged strikes.
