The U.S. Coast Guard found a debris field confirmed to be from a Canadian air ambulance that disappeared during a medical evacuation flight from Bermuda to Boston early Saturday. The six people aboard remained unaccounted for as crews continued searching waters south of Nantucket, Massachusetts.
The Gulfstream G100, operated by Ontario-based Latitude Air Ambulance, was carrying a patient, a family member and four crew members. Canadian Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said four Canadians were aboard, while the Coast Guard identified the other two people as Bermudian nationals.
The aircraft departed Bermuda’s LF Wade International Airport at about 12:41 a.m. and lost contact with the Federal Aviation Administration shortly afterward. Flight-tracking data showed it descending thousands of feet within minutes before disappearing from radar. Radio transmissions indicated the aircraft was experiencing electrical problems, and air traffic controllers had difficulty communicating with its pilot.
The Coast Guard deployed boats, aircraft and a helicopter to the area and said crews had searched roughly 1,644 square miles over about 27 hours. The cutter William Sparling was set to continue searching through the night.
Bermuda Premier David Burt said his government was in contact with U.S. authorities and the passengers’ families. The FAA said it was coordinating with the Coast Guard and the Rescue Coordination Center.
