Student protests over conditions in French high schools have spread from Paris to cities across the country, disrupting hundreds of educational establishments and leading to clashes with police.
Students say schools are underfunded and overcrowded, with absent teachers going unreplaced and some buildings in serious disrepair. France24 reported that up to 500 high schools would fully or partly suspend lessons on Monday, while the BBC said more than 500 schools had already faced disruption. Figures cited by The Guardian put the number of disrupted schools and educational establishments at 564 on Friday.
Some demonstrations have remained peaceful, but violence has included burning and vandalism at schools, barricades and projectiles thrown at police. Officers have used tear gas during clashes. France’s education minister said 24 schools had been burned or ransacked, according to France24, while the ministry reported at least 65 staff members injured, the BBC said.
The Guardian reported nearly 3,000 teenagers detained since the tensions began and about 600 arrests on Friday. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said the unrest had shifted from a student protest to a public-order issue.
Student representatives called for peaceful demonstrations to continue and distanced themselves from the violence. A coalition of unions has called for further mobilization and strike action on Tuesday in support of the students.
