Two men were killed and 35 other people were injured after gunfire erupted at a homecoming block party in Vienna, Georgia, early Sunday, authorities said.
Dooly County sheriff’s deputies were patrolling the gathering when they heard shots at about 1:25 a.m., according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Investigators said the shooting originated on Pine Street and that victims were taken to several hospitals. Officials did not specify how many of the 35 injured people had been shot or describe the severity of their injuries.
Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls identified the people killed only as men ages 20 and 23. Both were pronounced dead at the scene with fatal gunshot wounds. CBS News reported that they were found several blocks from where investigators believe the shooting began.
Sheriff Craig Peavy told WMAZ that more than 1,000 people attended the party and that shots were fired in two locations about a block apart. Deputies were monitoring the crowd at the time.
Authorities had not released the victims’ names or information about a possible suspect or motive. The GBI is investigating at the request of the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office and said the inquiry remained active Sunday.
