A 40-year-old man was taken into federal custody after Texas and federal authorities investigated what officials described as a credible threat against the Texas State Capitol in Austin.
The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the suspect as Benny Caldera Jr. Authorities said DPS and the FBI traced him after receiving information that someone had threatened an attack. A DPS SWAT team located Caldera at his home in Converse, near San Antonio, and took him into custody without incident.
According to arrest documents cited by NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth and Breitbart, an acquaintance told investigators that Caldera said he intended to go to the Capitol and “shoot it up.” The documents also alleged that he made threatening remarks about the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Authorities have not publicly detailed a broader motive.
Caldera was initially booked into the Bexar County Jail on a charge of making a terroristic threat against a public servant. DPS later said the FBI took him into custody to face additional federal charges connected to the alleged plot. He remained in federal custody.
Security at the Capitol was increased as a precaution while the investigation continued. DPS said there was no reason to believe an ongoing threat remained. Gov. Greg Abbott praised DPS and the FBI for stopping the alleged attack.
