Ethiopian federal forces take control of Mekelle after TPLF withdrawal

Ethiopian federal troops and allied fighters took control of Mekelle, the capital of the northern Tigray region, after the Tigray People’s Liberation Front withdrew from the city.

Government-aligned forces were patrolling Mekelle on Sunday, according to France24. A resident and humanitarian sources also told Reuters that federal forces controlled the city. The advance followed the recapture of Mekelle’s main airport by the Ethiopian army and pro-government fighters.

The TPLF said in a social media statement late Saturday that it had “temporarily moved out of Mekelle” to operate elsewhere. The group leads an armed opposition alliance formed by seven political and armed organizations seeking to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government and establish a transitional administration.

The latest fighting began on September 23 after the alliance was announced, following the collapse of a 2022 peace agreement that ended a war between Ethiopia’s federal government and Tigrayan forces. Ethiopia has accused Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt of supporting the opposition coalition. Sudan and Egypt have denied involvement, while Eritrea severed diplomatic ties with Ethiopia over the allegations.

As federal forces consolidated control of Mekelle, representatives of Eritrea, Sudan and other regional states met in El-Alamein, Egypt, and called for disputes to be resolved through peaceful means. The United States separately urged Ethiopia and Eritrea to exercise restraint, respect neighboring countries’ sovereignty and return to dialogue.
