Pakistani security forces killed 11 suspected militants in two intelligence-based operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan district over two days, according to state media and security sources.
Three militants were killed in an operation on Monday, state media reported. The operation followed another raid in the district on Sunday in which security sources said eight militants, including three key commanders, were killed. Officials said a large quantity of weapons and ammunition and foreign currency was recovered after Sunday’s operation.
The authorities identified those killed as members of “Fitna al-Khawarij,” the state’s term for militants affiliated with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. State media said the operations were conducted under the Azm-e-Istehkam counterterrorism framework.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the security forces after both operations. Zardari said such actions were weakening militant networks, while Sharif reiterated that counterterrorism operations would continue until terrorism was eliminated.
Dera Ismail Khan and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have experienced repeated militant attacks and security operations in recent months. The Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies recorded 54 attacks in the province, excluding the merged districts, in August, up from 36 in July.
