The Bharatiya Janata Party announced candidates for October 16 Rajya Sabha elections, naming eight nominees in Uttar Pradesh as well as Dinesh Arya in Uttarakhand and actor-politician Koel Mallick in West Bengal.
In Uttar Pradesh, the party selected Radhakant Ojha, Prakash Pal, Dharampal Singh, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan, Gopi Krishna Pandey, Priyanka Singh Rawat and Shruti Gangwar for 10 seats. The BJP has the Assembly strength to win at least seven, according to The Hindu. The Samajwadi Party has nominated Ram Gopal Yadav and industrialist Dhanraj Nathwani and may contest a third seat. BJP Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri, whose term is ending, was not renominated.
Mallick joined the BJP on Monday, one day after receiving its Rajya Sabha nomination, and filed her papers in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya. She is expected to be elected unopposed based on the BJP’s strength in the state Assembly.
Mallick entered the Rajya Sabha as a Trinamool Congress member in April but resigned on July 16, after the TMC lost the West Bengal Assembly election. She did not give a reason in her resignation letter and avoided directly explaining her departure when questioned Monday. Mallick said she was honored by the responsibility and would work on issues affecting the state.
Nominations close October 6, with scrutiny on October 7 and withdrawals permitted until October 9. Voting and results are scheduled for October 16 where contests are required.
